Wisconsin Wrestling announced on Nov. 11 the signing of two in-state athletes, Hunter Stevens and Eli Leonard, to its Class of 2026 recruiting class.
The addition of Stevens and Leonard highlights the program’s focus on developing local talent and strengthening its roster with accomplished high school wrestlers from Wisconsin.
Hunter Stevens, from Linden and Mount Horeb High School, is a two-time WIAA state placewinner. He won consecutive conference, regional, and sectional titles as a freshman and sophomore. Stevens placed fifth at state in 2023 and third in 2024, compiling a record of 96-6 over those two years. His national achievements include being a finalist at the 2024 Fargo tournament, winning the Brian Keck Preseason National Championship in 2024, earning U.S. Open All-American honors in 2023, and placing third at the Super 32 tournament in 2025. He is ranked first in Wisconsin (Division 2, 150 pounds), sixth nationally by FloWrestling (144), and ninth by MatScouts (144). “I chose Wisconsin because the people, culture, and opportunities here will help me reach my full potential,” Stevens said. “I’m beyond excited to keep growing as a person, student, and wrestler. My goal is to make a lasting impact and enjoy every moment as a Badger.” Head coach Chris Bono said: “We’re thrilled to announce the signing of Hunter Stevens, a local standout from Mount Horeb High School and Sarbacher Academy, to our program. Hunter has exceptional talent, the work ethic, and the character we are looking for in our program. We cannot wait for Hunter to represent the W at the next level. Welcome to the family!”
Eli Leonard also joins from Mount Horeb High School. He is a three-time state placer with records of 43-8, 47-3, and 48-1 over his first three seasons. Leonard was named Badger Conference Wrestler of the Year for the 2024-25 season. Nationally ranked first in Wisconsin (Division 2, 190 pounds) and sixth by FloWrestling at 175 pounds, he earned All-American honors at both Fargo (fourth place) and Super 32 (fifth place) tournaments in 2025. Leonard has also represented Wisconsin on both freestyle and Greco Junior National Dual Teams. “I chose Wisconsin because of its exceptional wrestling program, strong coaching staff, and very supportive team culture,” Leonard said. “It’s a place where I can continue to push myself on and off the mat. The coaches believe in developing not just great athletes but great men as well… That’s exactly the type of environment I want to be a part of.” Bono added: “We’re excited to welcome Eli to our program! It’s always special to add a talented local athlete who represents what our program standards are all about! The hustle [and] effort attitude that Eli brings… are unmatched… We cannot wait to have Eli wearing the W on his chest. Welcome to the Family, Eli!”
The signings reflect Wisconsin Wrestling’s ongoing commitment to recruiting top talent within state lines while building on its tradition through strong coaching support.
