Wisconsin wrestlers advance in NCAA Championships after first day of competition

Wisconsin wrestling competed on March 19 in the opening day of the NCAA Wrestling Championships in Cleveland, Ohio, with several athletes advancing to the next round and others continuing their runs in the consolation bracket.

The event is significant for Wisconsin’s wrestling program as it provides an opportunity for individual wrestlers to compete at a national level and earn placement points for their team. The first day saw both victories and defeats for the Badgers, reflecting the high level of competition at the championships.

Luke Mechler started strong for Wisconsin at 157 pounds by securing a decision win over Cael Swensen from South Dakota State. Mechler overcame a deficit entering the third period, ultimately winning with an escape and riding time advantage to move into the Round of 16. Meanwhile, Zan Fugitt delivered a late takedown at 133 pounds to clinch a narrow victory over Carter Schmidt from Oklahoma in the consolation round.

Cody Goebel also advanced after recording consecutive takedowns in his match and finishing with an 11-7 decision. Braxton Amos ended Wisconsin’s day with a dominant performance, earning a major decision victory in his consolation bout.

Other results included Nicolar Rivera falling to Marc-Anthony McGowan (Princeton) by fall and then losing by decision to Cooper Flynn (Chattanooga). Joseph Zargo was defeated by Chance Lamer (Nebraska) and Kaden Cassidy (George Mason). Luke Condon lost both his preliminary matches at 174 pounds. Wyatt Ingham was bested by Bennett Berge (South Dakota State) and Sonny Sasso (Virginia Tech), while Braxton Amos rebounded from an initial loss to Juan Mora (Oklahoma) with his major decision win over Jarrett Stoner (Missouri).

As competition continues into Day Two, Wisconsin wrestlers will look to build on their performances and secure further advancement or placement within their respective brackets.
