West Virginia University’s wrestling team, ranked No. 20 nationally, will host Glenville State, Princeton, and Appalachian State in the Mountaineer Quad at Hope Coliseum on Sunday. This event marks the Mountaineers’ first home competition of the season. The team will face Glenville State at noon, Princeton at 1:30 p.m., and Appalachian State at 3 p.m. Tickets are available free of charge, and all matches will be streamed live on ESPN+.
The Mountaineers come into the quad with a 1-0 record for the season after defeating American last week by a score of 32-6. In that match, redshirt sophomore Ty Watters (157 pounds), ranked third nationally, returned from injury to win by technical fall with a score of 21-6. Redshirt junior Ian Bush (184 pounds) also notched his second ranked victory of the year with an 11-2 major decision over No. 28 Caleb Campos.
Last season, West Virginia defeated all three teams it faces in this quad event. Against Appalachian State, West Virginia achieved one of its best road performances of the year with a decisive 37-8 win. Historically, West Virginia holds a 2-0 record against Appalachian State, is tied 1-1 overall against Princeton, and has won all five previous meetings with Glenville State.
Glenville State is coached by former Mountaineer Dylan Cottrell, who competed for West Virginia from 2014 to 2017 and was the program’s first Big 12 champion. He returns to Morgantown as Glenville’s head coach in his fifth season.
Projected lineups for each team have been announced and include several nationally ranked wrestlers across different weight classes.
