The No. 17 West Virginia University wrestling team lost to No. 5 Oklahoma State with a score of 34-3 at Hope Coliseum in Morgantown on Sunday. This defeat marks the Mountaineers’ second consecutive loss, following a recent match against North Carolina.
West Virginia started strong with freshman Gunner Andrick, ranked No. 25, competing against Oklahoma State’s Ronnie Ramirez at 133 pounds. Andrick led after an escape in the second period and secured his victory with a takedown in the final period, winning 4-2. This was Andrick’s third win over a ranked opponent this season.
After Andrick’s win, Oklahoma State took control by winning the next nine matches. The Mountaineers were missing several key wrestlers: freshman Brock Kehler, redshirt sophomore Ty Watters (ranked No. 1 at 157), redshirt junior Brody Conley (No. 20 at 174), and graduate student Willie McDougald (149).
Full results included victories for Oklahoma State’s Sergio Vega, Casey Swiderski, Landon Robideau, LaDarion Lockett, Alex Facundo, Zack Ryder, Cody Merrill, Konner Doucet, and Troy Spratley across various weight classes.
West Virginia will compete again on Friday, Jan. 9 against Arizona State in Tempe.
