Virginia Tech wrestling secured its second straight Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championship on March 8, defeating competitors at Cassell Coliseum in front of a record crowd of 4,692. The Hokies finished with 106 team points, ahead of Stanford’s 84 and North Carolina State’s 57, and qualified ten wrestlers for the upcoming NCAA Championships in Cleveland.
The victory marks the fourth time in program history that Virginia Tech has qualified all ten wrestlers for the national tournament, and the third time under head coach Tony Robie. Five Hokies were crowned individual ACC champions: Jaden Bullock at 184 pounds, Sonny Sasso at 197 pounds, Eddie Ventresca at 125 pounds, Aaron Seidel at 133 pounds, and Collin Gaj at 149 pounds.
Bullock won his first ACC title after transferring to Virginia Tech this season. Sasso claimed the Hokies’ first conference title at 197 pounds since 2018 by defeating Stanford’s Angelo Posada. Ventresca repeated as champion at 125 pounds with a win over Nico Provo of Stanford. Freshman Seidel dominated his final match against Tyler Knox of Stanford to earn both the conference title and Most Outstanding Wrestler honors. Gaj returned from injury to win a close contest against Koy Buesgens of NC State for the championship at 149 pounds.
In addition to their champions, Virginia Tech advanced eight wrestlers to the finals after winning eight out of nine semifinal matches. Tom Crook and Jimmy Mullen also earned automatic bids to nationals through consolation victories. This strong performance allowed the Hokies to build an insurmountable lead in team scoring early in the event.
The team now prepares for the NCAA Championships scheduled for March 19-21 in Cleveland. This achievement continues a period of success under Robie’s leadership as head coach over the past nine seasons.
