No. 6 Virginia Tech hosted No. 3 Oklahoma State in a wrestling dual at Cassell Coliseum on Saturday, where the Hokies won four bouts but ultimately lost 12-19 to the Cowboys. The event drew a crowd of 6,147, marking the second-largest attendance for a wrestling match in Blacksburg.
The dual began with a notable rematch at 125 pounds between Virginia Tech’s Eddie Ventresca and Oklahoma State’s Troy Spratley. Ventresca secured a win in tiebreakers, reversing the outcome from their previous NCAA semifinal meeting.
Virginia Tech then suffered losses at 133 and 141 pounds before freshman Drew Gorman stepped up at 149 pounds. Gorman managed an escape late in his match to force sudden victory, where he scored a takedown to secure a win for the Hokies.
At 184 pounds, Jaden Bullock delivered what was described as a “signature performance,” winning his bout with tactical moves and strong defense. Sonny Sasso followed at 197 pounds with another hard-fought victory against Cody Merrill, earning his second top-10 win of the season.
Despite these efforts, Oklahoma State won five matches and held on for the team victory. The final score was No. 6 Virginia Tech – 12, No. 3 Oklahoma State – 19.
After the match, Virginia Tech Wrestling expressed appreciation for fan support: “HokieNation, THANK YOU. Y’all gave us life and rocked us through it all. We appreciate you. Best IN THE COUNTRY.”
Virginia Tech will next face Duke on Friday, January 15 at Cassell Coliseum in its regular season finale.
