Sixth-ranked Virginia Tech secured a 29-9 victory over No. 13 North Carolina in an Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling match held Friday evening at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Virginia Tech won eight out of ten bouts during the dual. The loss moves North Carolina’s season record to 9-4 overall and 2-3 in conference competition.
North Carolina’s Nick O’Neill, competing at 141 pounds, achieved his first ACC win by pinning No. 22 Tom Crook of Virginia Tech in the second period. This fall marked O’Neill’s sixth of the season, which is currently the highest on the team.
At 174 pounds, Collin Carrigan earned a sudden-victory decision against No. 30 Sergio Desainte with an overtime takedown. This was Carrigan’s first dual and ACC win this season.
The Tar Heels will next host Stanford for their regular season finale at Carmichael Arena on Friday. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ACCNX.
