Virginia Tech wrestling advanced eight athletes to the second day of the 2026 NCAA Wrestling Championships, with No. 2 Eddie Ventresca and No. 4 Aaron Seidel moving forward in their respective winner brackets, according to a March 19 announcement from the team.
The progress of these wrestlers is significant as it keeps Virginia Tech’s hopes alive for podium finishes at one of collegiate wrestling’s most prestigious events. With two competitors still in contention for championship honors and six others fighting through the consolation bracket, the Hokies maintain a strong presence at the tournament.
At 125 pounds, Ventresca secured two victories to open his third NCAA Championship appearance. He first defeated Drexel’s Desmond Pleasant by an 8-6 decision and then overcame Illinois’ Spencer Moore with a decisive early sequence that led to a 5-2 win. This performance places Ventresca in Friday morning’s quarterfinals with an opportunity to earn his third All-American honor.
True freshman Seidel impressed in his first NCAA appearance at 133 pounds by achieving two technical falls: a swift 17-2 victory over Wyoming’s Luke Willochell and a dominant 22-4 result against Northern Iowa’s Julian Farber. Seidel will compete for All-American status on Friday morning.
Six other Hokies remain active in the consolation rounds after mixed results in their initial matches. Notable performances include Collin Gaj’s opening win at 149 pounds before dropping his next match, Ethen Miller’s narrow victory followed by a loss to a returning All-American, Sergio Desiante’s rebound win after an opening defeat, Jaden Bullock’s tiebreaker success before falling into consolations, Sonny Sasso’s comeback pin after an upset loss, and Jimmy Mullen’s advancement past Columbia before facing top-seeded opposition.
Wrestling resumes on Friday, March 20 at noon Eastern Time with both quarterfinal and consolation action broadcast live on ESPNU and ESPN+.
