The University of Maryland marked its annual Giving Day on Wednesday, achieving record-breaking results for Maryland Athletics. The department received 1,211 gifts totaling $632,071, surpassing previous fundraising efforts.

“On behalf of everyone at Maryland Athletics, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our incredible fans, alumni, and supporters who made this year’s Giving Day a truly historic one,” said Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics Jim Smith. “Giving Day is always about more than a single number, it’s about the strength of the Maryland community. This year, you showed once again that when Terp Nation comes together, we can accomplish extraordinary things.”

A total of 1,109 donors contributed to Maryland Athletics this year. More than half were new donors. The number exceeded last year’s record of 786 donors. Gifts came from individuals in 33 states and Washington D.C., with 339 contributions directed toward sport-specific funds and 17 endowment funds.

“This remarkable show of support demonstrates the passion that defines Terp Nation,” Smith said. “Your gifts—no matter the size—make a direct impact on the experience we provide our student-athletes. From scholarships and training resources to academic support and championship-level facilities, your commitment helps ensure our Terps have the tools they need to succeed in competition, in the classroom, and in life.”

Participation among coaches and the football team reached 100%, highlighting strong internal support within Maryland Athletics.

“Seeing more than 1,000 donors come together for Maryland Giving Day is a powerful reminder of just how passionate and committed Terp Nation is to our student-athletes,” said Senior Associate Athletic Director/Chief Development Officer Kirby Mills. “Breaking our donor record reflects the incredible pride our supporters have in this program. Every gift represents someone choosing to invest in the future of Maryland Athletics, and that collective generosity truly makes a difference for our student-athletes and the opportunities we can provide them.”

Several former athletes joined as donors this year, including Lonny Baxter, Steve Francis, Laura Harper, Brionna Jones, Drew Nicholas, Nick Novak, Derik Queen, and Joe Smith.

Across all areas at UMD during Giving Day, nearly 10,000 people participated worldwide. The university raised $9.42 million within 24 hours—a new campus-wide record.

Smith contributed personally by donating $1,000 for every 100 donors throughout the day with an aim to give $10,000 if they reached their goal of 1,000 donors.

“Thank you for believing in our student-athletes, our programs, and the future of the Terps,” Smith said. “The future is bright, and thanks to you, we are just getting started.”

Alan and Kim Cason’s contribution supports Forward: The University of Maryland Campaign for the Fearless—a fundraising initiative aiming to collect $2.5 billion for expanding educational access at UMD as well as supporting research and community-building efforts. As part of this campaign,Maryland Athletics seeks to raise at least $350 million toward goals such as fostering a championship culture and empowering students.
