UNI wrestling earns four silver medals and nine podium finishes at Nebraska open

Four members of the University of Northern Iowa wrestling team secured second-place finishes at the Younes Hospitality Open in Kearney, Nebraska, on Saturday. A total of nine Panthers earned medals during the tournament.

The UNI wrestlers achieved nine technical falls overall. Freshmen Max Brady (141 pounds) and RJ Weston (157 pounds) each contributed two technical falls as they advanced to the podium. Additionally, Garrett Rinken (133 pounds) recorded two pins, including one against Scott Fulsos (Unattached). Freshman Kyler Knaack (157 pounds), in his collegiate debut, pinned Francisco Duran (Midland) in 1:36, which was the fastest pin of the tournament.

Max Brady finished second at 141 pounds in the elite division. Kyler Knaack earned a silver medal at 157 pounds in the amateur division. Jack Thomsen (165 pounds) and Izzy Moreno (174 pounds) also secured second-place finishes.

Connor Thorpe placed third at 141 pounds. Rinken, Weston, and Grant Stromberg (heavyweight) each took fourth place in their respective weight classes. Bowen Downey rounded out UNI’s results with a fifth-place finish at 125 pounds.

The Panthers will host North Dakota State for their home opener on Sunday, Nov. 23, with competition beginning at 1 p.m. CT inside the McLeod Center. The dual will be available for live viewing on FloWrestling.
