Bill Smith, a prominent figure in the history of University of Northern Iowa (UNI) wrestling, will be honored posthumously with a jersey retirement ceremony. The event is scheduled for Saturday night prior to UNI’s home Big 12 dual meet against West Virginia at the McLeod Center.
Smith, who died in 2018, will be represented by his family as a banner featuring his name and a 1940s-era UNI singlet is raised in the arena. His family will also receive a commemorative plaque. In addition, UNI’s new competition mat, named in Smith’s memory, will make its debut during the Feb. 14 dual.
This ceremony marks the first of 19 planned jersey retirements for UNI Athletics in 2026, coinciding with the university’s sesquicentennial celebration and the launch of its jersey retirement program. Other upcoming honorees include AJ Green from men’s basketball on Feb. 15 and Jacqui Kalin from women’s basketball on Feb. 28. Further recognitions are planned for athletes from other teams and those whose sports are no longer sponsored by UNI during homecoming festivities at an All-Sports Reunion.
“Any time you get to put a jersey in the rafters it’s a pretty cool thing,” said UNI head coach Doug Schwab. “I look forward to welcoming his family to town as they support him. I got to know Bill before he passed and he loved UNI wrestling! He had an immense amount of pride when he competed here and for the program where it is now. I can’t think of a better guy to put up in the rafters and the first one for the program.”
Born in Portland, Oregon in 1928, Smith grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa and was a two-time state medalist at Jefferson High School. From 1948 to 1951, he competed for what was then Iowa State Teacher’s College under coach Dave McCuskey, compiling an undefeated record of 52-0-1. Smith won consecutive NCAA titles at 165 pounds in 1949 and 1950 and earned All-American honors both years. His achievements helped lead the Panthers to second place at nationals with his first title and then an NCAA team championship on their home mat in West Gym.
Smith also excelled beyond college wrestling as a three-time national AAU freestyle champion between 1949 and 1951. At the Helsinki Olympics in 1952, representing Team USA, he became only the fifth Panther wrestler to compete at that level—and joined Gerald Leeman as just the second ISTC wrestler to medal—winning five out of six matches with two pins en route to becoming UNI’s second Olympic champion after William “Red” Hamilton.
After retiring from competition, Smith coached high school wrestling at Rock Island High School (Illinois), leading them to a strong dual record over four seasons and securing a state title. He later spent nearly ten years coaching at San Francisco’s Olympic Club where he contributed to seven national team titles across freestyle and Greco-Roman disciplines.
In 1968, Smith served as head coach for Canada’s Olympic wrestling team at Mexico City before returning stateside where he led Clayton Valley High School (California) to another state championship.
Smith was inducted into several halls of fame recognizing his contributions: Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame (1972), National Wrestling Hall of Fame (1978), and as part of UNI Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame’s inaugural class (1985).
The dual meet against West Virginia begins at 7 p.m., with live coverage available via FloWrestling; tickets can be purchased through the official UNI athletics website or by contacting their ticket office directly.
