Redshirt sophomore Ty Watters from West Virginia University has been ranked No. 1 in the country at 157 pounds by FloWrestling. This recognition comes after his undefeated start to the season and a strong showing at the Mountaineer Quad, where he secured wins over Glenville State’s Jimmie Bailes, Princeton’s Gavin Hawk, and Appalachian State’s Jeremiah Price.
Watters also claimed victories against Stanford’s Daniel Cardenas at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic and against American, bringing his record to 5-0 for the 2025-26 season.
In addition to Watters’ individual ranking, six other Mountaineers are featured in this week’s FloWrestling rankings. Graduate students Jett Strickenberger (125 pounds) and Willie McDougald (149 pounds) are ranked No. 9 and No. 23 respectively. Redshirt juniors Brody Conley (174 pounds) and Ian Bush (184 pounds) hold positions No. 20 and No. 17, while redshirt freshman Rune Lawrence is listed at No. 27 in the 197-pound category.
West Virginia University’s wrestling team has also advanced two spots in the NWCA rankings, now standing at No. 18 nationally.
The Mountaineers are scheduled to compete against Rider on Sunday, November 23, at Hope Coliseum in Morgantown.
