Redshirt sophomore Ty Watters was named West Virginia University’s Student-Athlete of the Week, according to a March 23 announcement from the university.
Watters received this recognition after earning his second All-American honor at the 2026 NCAA Wrestling Championships, where he finished in sixth place. This achievement makes him only the second Mountaineer wrestler at 157 pounds to earn All-American status.
During the championships, Watters won matches against three ranked opponents. He secured a victory by fall over Virginia’s No. 22 Colton Washleski, followed by a 7–1 decision against Penn’s No. 6 Jude Swisher. To clinch his All-America finish, he defeated Cornell’s No. 3 Tyler Shapiro with a close 6–5 decision.
The university said that this recognition is presented by University Apartments and highlights outstanding athletic and academic achievements among student-athletes.
Watters’ performance continues to build on his career accomplishments and contributes to West Virginia University’s tradition in collegiate wrestling.
