Indiana University secured three NCAA wrestling qualifiers after the first day of competition at the Big Ten Championships held at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pennsylvania. The event saw six Indiana wrestlers advancing to compete on Sunday.
Jacob Moran, seeded fourth at 125 pounds, earned his second career NCAA tournament bid with two victories in Session I. He later lost to top-seeded Luke Lilledahl of Penn State by major decision, 11-3, and will continue in the consolation semifinals.
Bryce Lowery, seeded eleventh at 157 pounds, and Gabe Sollars, seeded eighth at 197 pounds, also clinched NCAA spots by winning their respective consolation matches in Session II. Lowery defeated Darius Marines of Michigan State 5-4 to secure his first NCAA appearance and followed with a 9-1 major decision over Luke Mechler of Wisconsin. Sollars did not allow a takedown in his two wins, including a 6-1 decision over Hayden Walters of Michigan and a 2-1 win against Branson John of Maryland.
Each of these three qualifiers can finish as high as third place but no lower than sixth place in their weight classes.
Other Indiana wrestlers set to compete on Sunday include Tyler Lillard (165), Derek Gilcher (174), and Sam Goin (184). They will participate in extra ninth-place bracket matches but are not eligible for podium finishes. At 165 pounds, one additional NCAA bid is available for the ninth-place finisher; the 174-pound bracket offers bids for both ninth and tenth places. There are only eight NCAA spots at 184 pounds; therefore, winning the ninth-place bracket does not guarantee qualification.
Team standings after Session II placed Indiana tenth with 33 points. Penn State led with 146.5 points.
Competition resumes Sunday at noon with consolation semifinals and seventh-place matches, followed by placing matches for all positions outside seventh place beginning at 4:30 p.m.
