Dylan Shawver and Lenny Pinto, members of the Rutgers University wrestling team, participated in the 2025 NWCA All-Star Classic on Saturday at Jersey Mike’s Arena. The event, presented by Nike Wrestling, is considered the unofficial start to the collegiate folkstyle wrestling season and included two reigning NCAA Champions and ten Division I All-Americans from last year.
In his debut at Jersey Mike’s Arena, Pinto competed against Simon Ruiz of Cornell in a closely contested match. Pinto took an early lead with two takedowns but ultimately lost 9-6 after Ruiz responded with a rideout, near-fall points in the second period, and a decisive escape and takedown.
Shawver faced Lucas Byrd of Illinois, the reigning NCAA Champion. After a scoreless first period, Shawver scored an escape for the first point in the second period. Byrd then secured a takedown and near fall to win 7-1.
Rutgers wrestlers are preparing for their season opener on Sunday at Jersey Mike’s Arena. They will compete against Bloomsburg, Centenary, and Gardner-Webb in three consecutive matches beginning at 10 a.m.
