Seven wrestlers from the University of Illinois have secured spots at the upcoming NCAA Championships after the first day of competition at the Big Ten Wrestling Championships in University Park, Pennsylvania. The qualifiers are Lucas Byrd (133 pounds), Michael Gioffre (149 pounds), Kannon Webster (157 pounds), Braeden Scoles (165 pounds), Colin Kelly (174 pounds), Chris Moore (184 pounds), and Luke Luffman (285 pounds).

Kannon Webster reached the semifinals in the 157-pound weight class as the No. 3 seed. He started with a pin against Ty Wilson of Northwestern and followed with a major decision over Charlie Millard of Minnesota. In his semifinal match, Webster narrowly missed a key takedown and lost to Penn State’s PJ Duke by a score of 4-2. He will face Bryce Lowery of Indiana in the consolation semifinals.

Luke Luffman earned his fifth trip to the NCAA Championships, beginning with a win over Hayden Filipovich from Purdue and then defeating Gabe Christenson from Northwestern to secure qualification. Luffman is set to compete for seventh place against Koy Hopke of Minnesota.

Lucas Byrd, also qualifying for his fifth NCAA Championships, received a bye in the opening round but was defeated in his quarterfinal bout—his first loss since January 17, 2025. Byrd recovered with an 8-0 major decision over Braxton Brown from Maryland and advanced further due to an injury default by Jacob Van Dee of Nebraska. He will meet Drake Ayala from Iowa in the consolation semifinals.

Colin Kelly, a redshirt freshman, qualified for his first NCAA Championships after defeating Brody Baumann from Purdue and Eddie Enright from Northwestern. Kelly will wrestle Baumann again for seventh place.

Chris Moore heads to his second NCAA Championships following victories over Sepanta Ahanj-Elias of Maryland and JD Perez of Northwestern, as well as two medical forfeits including one by Silas Allred from Nebraska. Moore will compete in the third-place match due to Allred’s medical forfeit.

Michael Gioffre earned his first NCAA berth despite losing his opening match; he rebounded with wins over Drew Roberts of Minnesota and Clayton Jones of Michigan State. Gioffre is scheduled to face Lachlan McNeil from Michigan next.

Braeden Scoles returns to the NCAA Championships for a second time after winning matches against Jacob Bostelman from Northwestern and AJ Rodrigues from Maryland, both by technical fall. Scoles will face Paddy Gallagher from Ohio State for seventh place.

At the end of day one, Illinois is tied for fifth place in team standings with Minnesota at 69.5 points each. Penn State leads with 146.5 points, followed by Ohio State and Nebraska.

The Big Ten Wrestling Championships continue tomorrow with session three starting at 11 a.m., broadcast on B1G+, and session four beginning at 3:30 p.m. Central Time on BTN.
