Rutgers University wrestling secured seven automatic spots at the NCAA Wrestling Championships after the first day of the Big Ten Wrestling Championships on March 7 at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College, Pennsylvania. The Scarlet Knights’ qualifiers are Ayden Smith (125 pounds), Joseph Olivieri (141), Andrew Clark (149), Andrew Barbosa (165), Lenny Pinto (174), Shane Cartagena-Walsh (184), and Remy Cotton (197). The national tournament will take place from March 19 to 21 in Cleveland.
This marks the fifth consecutive season under head coach Scott Goodale that Rutgers has qualified at least seven wrestlers for nationals, and the twelfth straight year with five or more qualifiers since 2015. The team is currently eighth in the standings with 56.5 points, with several wrestlers still competing in consolation brackets.
Barbosa advanced to Saturday’s semifinals by defeating last year’s national runner-up Joey Blaze from Purdue, who was previously undefeated. Barbosa was one of only seven wrestlers seeded outside the top four to reach a championship semifinal across the conference. “That’s a big win for him,” said head coach Scott Goodale. “Those are the type of wins that get you out on that stage Saturday night. Great win, you just have to go out and win the next one. That’s the Big Ten Conference.” Barbosa later lost to Iowa’s Mikey Caliendo and moved into consolation rounds.
Other notable performances included Cartagena-Walsh’s victory over Ohio State’s Dylan Fishback and Olivieri’s decision against Penn State’s Braeden Davis. Smith avenged an earlier loss to Illinois’ Spencer Moore, while Pinto and Clark also recorded key wins against ranked opponents. Goodale said, “I loved the way be bounced back tonight. We still lost a lot of close matches, but we also beat a lot of good guys and won a lot of close matches. This is the Big Ten Tournament, it’s really, really hard. We got seven guys through and hopefully we’ll have more tomorrow.”
Looking ahead, several Scarlet Knights remain alive in their respective brackets as they aim for additional qualifications or improved placements during Sunday’s sessions.
