Rutgers University wrestling achieved a significant milestone on Feb. 6 by defeating No. 6 ranked Minnesota, 23-15, at Jersey Mike’s Arena in Piscataway before an audience of 3,702 fans.
The win marks Rutgers’ first victory over the Golden Gophers since joining the Big Ten Conference in the 2014-15 season and is their highest-ranked triumph since 2016. The result is notable for its impact on the program’s history and its standing within collegiate wrestling.
No. 16 Remy Cotton played a decisive role by pinning No. 25 Gavin Nelson in overtime at the 197-pound match, securing the team win with two matches remaining. “It’s a team effort. It starts from the guy at 125 and builds all the way up to heavyweight,” Cotton said. “I was in the back locker room when [Ayden Smith] won his match and you could hear the crowd, and guys start thinking, ‘Okay, we got this. We got this.’ Let’s keep building. It took everyone tonight.” Cotton later added, “This atmosphere is amazing. Seeing these fans, seeing everybody here who’s super in it and just the passion they have for the sport of wrestling here is just amazing.”
Several Scarlet Knights contributed key victories throughout the night. No. 28 Ayden Smith upset All-American No. 10 Jore Volk at 125 pounds with a late takedown for a 7-2 decision. Smith said, “I just tried not to get too eager… So, knowing where I could score was really just what was going through my mind throughout the last 30 seconds.” Other notable performances included major decisions from No. 16 Lenny Pinto (174) and No. 27 Dylan Shawver (133), as well as decision wins by No. 29 Andrew Clark (149) and No. 29 Anthony White (165) against top-20 opponents.
Head coach Scott Goodale reflected on the significance of the achievement: “I knew it was there, but it is hard. You have got to have all the pieces click on a good night and you have to wrestle hard,” Goodale said. “[The Big Ten] is a tough conference, and it is a tough schedule. This is an awesome moment, and a big win. We just have to keep getting better and focus on next week.”
Rutgers will look to build on this momentum as they travel to face Michigan State on Friday, Feb. 13 in East Lansing.
