Rutgers wrestling defeats Rider 21-12 in Lawrenceville dual meet

Rutgers wrestling, ranked No. 16, defeated Rider University 21-12 on Jan. 31 at Alumni Gymnasium in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.

The match saw Rutgers win six out of ten bouts, including five of the last six matches. Notable performances included Andrew Barbosa at 165 pounds and Shane Cartagena-Walsh at 184 pounds, both earning bonus points for their victories. Dylan Shawver (133), Anthony White (157), Ryan Ford (174), and Hunter Catka (heavyweight) also secured wins by decision for the Scarlet Knights. This victory marks Rutgers’ eleventh consecutive win over Rider and allows them to retain possession of the B1G-MAC Trophy.

Rider started strong by winning three of the first four bouts and taking a 9-3 lead. However, after White’s win at 157 pounds, Barbosa delivered a major decision at 165 pounds that gave Rutgers a lead they maintained for the rest of the night.

Cartagena-Walsh extended Rutgers’ advantage with a technical fall in the third period at 184 pounds, while Catka closed out the dual with a decision win at heavyweight.

Looking ahead, Rutgers will host No. 9 Minnesota on Friday, Feb. 6 at Jersey Mike’s Arena for their final Big Ten home dual of the season. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.
