No. 2 Ohio State finished its home wrestling season undefeated after a 24-9 victory over No. 5 Iowa at the Covelli Center in Columbus on Friday. The match was held before a sellout crowd of 4,749.
With this win, Ohio State improved to 17-0 overall and 7-0 at home for the first time in program history. The team’s current start to the season is its best ever.
The dual began at the 157-pound weight class, where Iowa secured three consecutive wins by decision, giving them an early 9-0 lead. However, Ohio State responded by winning the next seven matches and scoring 24 unanswered points.
In the final home match of his career, Jesse Mendez (OSU) defeated Kale Petersen (Iowa) by technical fall, 21-3. Other notable performances included Dylan Fishback’s sudden victory win at 184 pounds and Luke Geog’s major decision at 197 pounds.
After the event, Ohio State Wrestling posted on social media: “Thank you to our five seniors, who are leaving an incredibly special legacy here at Ohio State! We are extremely proud to be able to call them Buckeyes for life.”
Ohio State will travel to face No. 1 Penn State in its next matchup.
Attendance for the meet was announced as a sellout with all seats filled at the Covelli Center.
