The NCAA released details on March 19 about how team points are awarded at the upcoming NCAA Wrestling Championships, which will take place from March 19 to 21 at Rocket Arena in Cleveland. The announcement explains the three main ways wrestlers can earn points for their teams: advancement points, placement points, and bonus points.

Understanding the scoring system is important for teams and fans as it determines which school will win the championship title. Each match result can have a significant impact on a team’s overall standing during the tournament.

According to the NCAA, wrestlers receive one point for each match won in the championship bracket and half a point in the consolation bracket. If a wrestler receives a bye and then wins in the next round, they also earn advancement points. However, no advancement points are given during placement matches.

Placement points are awarded based on where a wrestler finishes in their weight class. First place earns 16 team points, second place gets 12, third receives 10, fourth gets nine, fifth earns seven, sixth receives six, seventh gets four, and eighth place brings three team points. These placement points are added to the team score as soon as they are secured; for example, a finalist already has second-place points before wrestling for first.

Bonus points offer additional opportunities to boost team scores. Wrestlers can earn two extra team points with a fall, forfeit, default, disqualification or flagrant misconduct; one and a half extra points with a technical fall; and one extra point with a major decision. No bonus is given for regular decisions.

All matches of this year’s NCAA Wrestling Championships will be broadcast through ESPN’s family of networks.
