The NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee has announced the pre-allocation spots for the 2026 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, which will be held at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio from March 19 to 21. The committee also released its latest coaches and RPI rankings.

From the Big 12 Conference, a total of 63 wrestlers will automatically qualify for the national championships through their performance at the Big 12 Championships on March 6-7 at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In three weight classes—133, 184, and 197 pounds—the top eight finishers will earn automatic bids. The top seven finishers in both the 141 and 174-pound divisions will advance as well. Heavyweight qualifiers include the top six finishers, while five athletes each from the 125, 149, and 157-pound categories will move on. Four wrestlers from the 165-pound class will also secure automatic qualification.

Seeding and brackets for the Big 12 Championships are expected to be announced soon.

Across all conferences, a total of 288 pre-allocated spots have been distributed among ten weight classes. Each conference receives a minimum of one automatic qualifier per weight class. These allocations are based on regular season performance up to February 23 using criteria such as win percentage (minimum .700), coaches’ ranking (top 30), and RPI ranking (top 30). If a wrestler meets at least two of these standards, his conference is awarded an additional qualifying spot in that weight class.

After conference tournaments conclude, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will select an additional 42 at-large qualifiers. These selections will be announced on March 10, with final brackets and seeding revealed on March 11. All weight classes at nationals will feature a field of 33 competitors.

For the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), several wrestlers appear in national rankings: Trever Anderson (#27/18) at 125 pounds; Julian Farber (#20/19) at 133; Caleb Rathjen (#21/16) at 149; Ryder Downey (#6/6) at 165; Jared Simma (#13/14) at 174; Nick Fox (#21/19) at 184; and Adam Ahrendsen (#32/28) at heavyweight.

UNI is ranked seventeenth in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association poll after finishing with a dual record of ten wins and eight losses overall, including four wins against Big 12 opponents. Last year, UNI finished second in the Big 12 Championships and qualified ten athletes for nationals—the most since 1991.

Returning NCAA qualifiers for UNI include Trever Anderson (seventh place at last year’s Big 12s), Julian Farber (two-time qualifier), Caleb Rathjen (previously qualified with Iowa), Ryder Downey (two-time qualifier), and Jared Simma (two-time qualifier). Nick Fox and Adam Ahrendsen are seeking their first NCAA tournament appearances.

Doug Schwab, head coach of UNI wrestling, commented on this year’s postseason outlook: “Four Panthers will look to return to the national tournament in Trever Anderson, Julian Farber, Ryder Downey and Jared Simma, while Caleb Rathjen looks to return for the first time since 2024 with Iowa. Nick Fox and Adam Ahrendsen meanwhile will be in search of their first NCAA berths.”
