Moore and Webster win titles as Illinois wrestling places third at Cougar Clash

The University of Illinois wrestling team secured two individual titles at the Cougar Clash tournament in Edwardsville, Illinois, on Sunday. Spencer Moore and Kannon Webster each won their respective weight classes, helping Illinois finish third in the overall team standings.

Spencer Moore, ranked No. 25 nationally at 125 pounds, defeated top-seeded Trever Anderson of Northern Iowa by decision, 5-1, in the final. Moore began his run with a technical fall victory over Brandon Paez of Northern Iowa and followed up with another technical fall against Tyler Harper from Little Rock. In the semifinals, he earned a close win over Missouri’s Mack Mauger.

Kannon Webster, ranked No. 7 at 157 pounds and seeded first in his bracket, claimed his title with a technical fall (16-1) over J Conway of Missouri in the final. Webster dominated throughout the tournament, including a pin against RJ Weston of Northern Iowa in the semifinals.

Other notable performances for Illinois included Braeden Scoles (165 pounds) and Luke Luffman (285 pounds), who both finished second after falling to higher-ranked opponents from Northern Iowa in their respective finals matches.

Illinois also had several other wrestlers place: Colin Kelly took third at 174 pounds; Joey Braunagel was fifth at 184; CJ Campbell (125), Danny Pucino (141), and Will Baysingar (149) all placed sixth; while Kole Brower (141), Ryan Bennett (157), and Charlie Heydorn (197) each finished seventh.

Northern Iowa led the team standings with 190 points, followed by Oklahoma State with 187 points and Illinois with 157 points. Other teams competing included Missouri, SIUE, Brown, Northern Colorado, and Little Rock.

The next competition for Illinois will be the Collegiate Duals on December 21 in Nashville, Tennessee.
