Missouri wrestling finished the first day of the 2026 NCAA Wrestling Championships in 15th place with 12 points at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, on March 19. The Tigers had six wrestlers compete, ending the day with a combined record of seven wins and six losses, including three bonus point victories and two upsets over higher-ranked opponents. Two Missouri wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals scheduled for Friday.
The tournament is significant for Missouri as it showcases both experienced athletes and newcomers making an impact on the national stage. The team’s performance included several notable achievements and upsets that contributed to their standing after day one.
Redshirt freshman Mack Mauger began the competition at 125 pounds by winning his opening match before falling to top-seeded Luke Lilledahl of Penn State. At 133 pounds, sophomore Gage Walker secured a win against Army’s No. 14 seed but lost in the second round. Returning All-American Cam Steed achieved a technical fall in his first match and followed it with a pin in his second bout, earning him a spot in his first national quarterfinal. Aeoden Sinclair, seeded second at 184 pounds, also advanced to the quarterfinals after winning both matches decisively.
Evan Bates delivered one of the biggest upsets of the first round by defeating Oklahoma’s DJ Parker at 197 pounds but was eliminated in his next match. Jarrett Stoner competed at heavyweight but was unable to advance after two close losses.
Tournament notes highlight that since the 2021 NCAA Championships, Missouri wrestlers have compiled a strong record in opening session matches. Both Mauger and Walker earned their first career national tournament wins during this event. Steed’s pin marked his fifth of the season—all occurring in the first period—and secured his advancement to Friday’s quarterfinals.
Competition resumes on March 20 with Session III beginning at 11 a.m., featuring quarterfinals and consolation bouts as Missouri looks to improve its team standing.
