The University of Michigan wrestling team, ranked No. 11 nationally, competed at the National Duals Invitational in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Saturday. The Wolverines began the tournament with a strong performance against Arizona State, securing a 30-10 victory by winning seven bouts and earning six bonus wins.
Graduate student Diego Sotelo contributed to Michigan’s early momentum with an 8-0 major decision at 125 pounds. Dylan Gilcher, who moved up two weight classes for the event, posted a perfect 3-0 record on the day. Gilcher achieved ranked victories over No. 13 Nicco Ruiz (4-1) and No. 11 Maxx Mayfield (8-4), finishing several matches with decisive late scoring.
Other notable performances included Cameron Catrabone’s major decision over Chance McLane and Beau Mantanona’s first-period pin at 174 pounds. Brock Mantanona followed his brother with a major decision win at 184 pounds.
In their quarterfinal matchup against No. 2 Nebraska, Michigan fell short by a score of 24-14 despite four individual bout wins. Lachlan McNeil and Gilcher both recorded major decisions, while Brock Mantanona secured an upset victory over Nebraska’s No. 6 Silas Allred with a close 10-8 decision that featured multiple takedowns and reversals.
Michigan then faced No. 16 Missouri in the consolation bracket but lost 26-10 after giving up early points through a pin and narrow losses in lower-weight matches. McNeil earned a top-10 win at 149 pounds by defeating Josh Edmond in overtime, while Gilcher completed his unbeaten day with another ranked win at 165 pounds.
Following these results, Michigan is no longer eligible for the prize-money rounds of the tournament but will continue its season next weekend with dual meets against Columbia in New York City and Virginia at home in Ann Arbor.
