The University of Michigan wrestling team finished in seventh place at the NCAA Championships on March 21, as all five Wolverine All-Americans won their medal-round matches at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. The Wolverines scored 66 points and achieved their ninth top-10 finish in the last ten NCAA tournaments.
This result highlights the strength and consistency of Michigan’s wrestling program, which continues to produce top-tier athletes and strong team performances at the national level.
Graduate students Lachlan McNeil and Taye Ghadiali both secured third-place finishes in their respective weight classes, closing out their collegiate careers on a high note. McNeil, seeded eleventh at 149 pounds, earned a comeback win over Nebraska’s Chance Lamer and completed his career as a four-time All-American. Ghadiali, seeded third at heavyweight, posted two decision wins to claim third place and finished his career as a two-time All-American with a record of 131-31.
Redshirt freshmen Brock Mantanona (184 pounds) and Cameron Catrabone (157 pounds) also earned medals in their NCAA debuts. Mantanona took fifth place after splitting his consolation bouts, while Catrabone claimed seventh place by forfeit. Redshirt sophomore Beau Mantanona pinned Iowa State’s MJ Gaitan to secure seventh place at 174 pounds.
With five All-Americans this year, Michigan tied for the fifth most among all teams at the championships. The program now boasts 219 All-America citations in its history. Head coach Sean Bormet has coached 27 All-Americans since taking over in 2019. Notably, the Mantanonas became the fourth brother duo to earn All-America honors for Michigan, while Catrabone joined his father Jeff as part of the program’s fifth father-son duo to achieve this distinction.
Penn State won the team title with 181.5 points, followed by Oklahoma State and Nebraska.
