The University of Michigan wrestling team, ranked No. 10 nationally, lost to No. 22 Wisconsin by a score of 19-17 in their final Big Ten Conference dual meet on Sunday at UW Field House in Madison.
Michigan won four bouts during the competition, with three victories coming by bonus points. Despite these wins, the Wolverines were unable to recover from losses in several closely contested matches.
Taye Ghadiali, a graduate student and the fifth-ranked heavyweight according to InterMat, secured a 2-1 overtime victory over Braxton Amos, who is ranked ninth. Ghadiali earned the deciding point when Amos was penalized for stepping out of bounds for the third time during sudden victory. With this win, Ghadiali improved his season record to 19-2 and completed an undefeated 8-0 run in Big Ten duals.
At 141 pounds, Dylan Ragusin achieved a technical fall against Carson Exferd with a score of 19-3. Ragusin’s performance included five takedowns and a four-point leg turk before finishing with a single leg at the six-minute mark. This marked his second bonus win over the weekend.
Wisconsin gained control of the match after winning close decisions at 125, 149, and 157 pounds.
In the later bouts, redshirt sophomore Beau Mantanona (174 pounds) and redshirt freshman Brock Mantanona (184 pounds) each earned bonus wins for Michigan. Beau Mantanona defeated Luke Condon by major decision (14-4), recording four takedowns and capitalizing on stalling penalties while attempting to secure a fall. Brock Mantanona won by technical fall against Matthew Jens (20-5), tallying six takedowns and adding points through tilts.
Following this loss, Michigan holds an overall record of 8-6 and is even at 4-4 within Big Ten competition. The Wolverines will conclude their dual-meet schedule next Sunday when they travel to Mount Pleasant to face Central Michigan at McGuirk Arena.
