University of Iowa wrestler Michael Caliendo finished as the NCAA runner-up at 165 pounds on March 21 at the 2026 NCAA Championships held at Rocket Arena in Cleveland. The Hawkeyes secured fourth place in the team competition with a total of 92.5 points, earning a team trophy for the 50th time and marking their 71st top-10 finish in program history.

Caliendo’s performance continued Iowa’s tradition of success at the national level, extending its streak to 35 consecutive tournaments with an NCAA finalist. His appearance in the championship round was his second career finals showing, and he concluded the tournament as a four-time All-American.

Head coach Tom Brands commented on Caliendo’s effort after the final match. “I’ve got a guy that he is upstairs right now and he has to come down and get on the awards stand after that performance, and he’s not doing well,” said Brands. “I’m not doing well with him.”

Caliendo lost by technical fall (20-4) to top-seeded Mitchell Mesenbrink of Penn State in the finals. Brands reflected on how both athlete and coach process such results: “You evaluate; you make adjustments,” said Brands. “You execute those adjustments. You have to be really smart and really diligent… Go get what you want. It’s not that simple but maybe it is that simple. It’s too early to talk about that in my mind. We are in an adjustment period, because we are evaluating starting right now, and when I say right now, I mean you have to give me a minute with Caliendo, because you’ve got a guy hurting right now. You’ve got a Hawkeye that is hurting and I am hurting with him.”

The Hawkeyes’ lineup included four graduating seniors: Dean Peterson (125), Drake Ayala (133), Michael Caliendo (165), and Patrick Kennedy (174). Each contributed significantly during their collegiate careers, with multiple All-American honors among them.

Iowa has maintained consistent excellence at the NCAA Championships, earning team trophies in 16 of the last 18 events and producing at least one All-American for 55 consecutive tournaments since 1972—a stretch resulting in 339 All-Americans overall.

Looking ahead, Iowa continues its legacy as one of college wrestling’s most successful programs while preparing for future seasons.
