Brown opened his tournament with a technical fall over Logan Heil of Campbell and continued with a decision win against Kyle Montaperto of Virginia. He then edged Brett Ungar of Cornell before advancing through the semifinals by medical forfeit. In the championship match, Brown was narrowly defeated by Dom Serrano of Northern Colorado, 5-4.
Sophomore Branson John competed at 197 pounds and finished third overall. John’s run included a technical fall over Hunter Adams (App State), decisions over Austin Johnson (Oklahoma State) and Andrew Reall (Brown), before falling to Josh Barr (Penn State) in the semifinals. John rebounded in the consolation rounds and secured third place with an overtime takedown against Andrew Reall.
Carter Young, a recent transfer to Maryland, made his debut at 149 pounds and reached sixth place. Young recorded multiple wins by technical fall and major decision before medically forfeiting later in the tournament.
Nine additional Maryland wrestlers participated in various weight classes during the competition.
