Maryland wrestlers earn multiple podium finishes at Southeast Open

Maryland’s wrestling team delivered a strong performance at the 2025 Southeast Open in Salem, Virginia, with several athletes earning podium finishes in both the Open and Freshman/Sophomore brackets.

Branson John led the Terps by capturing first place in the 197-pound Open Division. He secured four consecutive bonus-point victories, including wins over ranked opponents Gavin Nelson of Minnesota and Rune Lawrence of West Virginia.

Braxton Brown, competing at 133 pounds, advanced to the finals after three straight wins but finished second after losing to Dillon Campbell from Virginia Tech. Oscar Williams also reached the finals in the 285-pound Freshman/Sophomore bracket, posting a 4-1 record and finishing as runner-up.

Dario Lemus placed third at 141 pounds in a competitive field, highlighted by a major decision victory in his final match. In the 125-pound Freshman/Sophomore bracket, Abram Cline reached the finals with three decision wins before taking second place.

Sepanta Ahanj-Elias (197 Freshman/Sophomore) and Tyler Garvin (125 Freshman/Sophomore) both secured fifth-place finishes. Ahanj-Elias ended his tournament with a major decision over Sawyer Vanrider of Campbell, while Garvin came back through the consolation rounds for an 11-10 win against Malachi Ortiz from VMI.

Unattached competitor Kal Miller (157) won three matches to reach the semifinals and ultimately finished third.

Full match results were provided for each weight class and bracket, reflecting Maryland’s depth across multiple divisions during the tournament.
