Indiana University began its participation in the NCAA Wrestling Championships on March 19 with six wrestlers competing in Session I at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Jacob Moran, seeded No. 14 at 125 pounds, won his opening match against No. 19 Kysen Terukina from the University of North Carolina by a score of 4-2, advancing to the Round of 16.
The tournament is significant for Indiana as it provides an opportunity for its athletes to compete on a national stage and potentially advance further in their respective brackets.
Moran’s match was closely contested, with both wrestlers scoreless after the first period. Terukina took a brief lead early in the second period with an escape point before Moran secured the only takedown of the match to move ahead and ultimately win.
The other five Indiana competitors lost their opening matches but remain active in the tournament and will continue wrestling in the consolation bracket during Session II. Tyler Lillard (165 lbs.) narrowly lost to Max Brignola of Lehigh after a review overturned a potential winning takedown, resulting in a tiebreaker loss, 3-2. Gabe Sollars (197 lbs.) led his match into the third period but was overtaken by Zayne Lehman from Ohio University, finishing with a final score of 6-4. Sam Goin (184 lbs.) fell to Caleb Uhlenhopp from Utah Valley following a decisive third-period takedown. Bryce Lowery (157 lbs.) was defeated by major decision against Kaleb Larkin from Arizona State, while Derek Gilcher (174 lbs.) lost by technical fall to Cam Steed from Missouri.
After Session I, Indiana stands tied for thirty-eighth place with one team point. The top five teams are Penn State, Iowa, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, and Iowa State.
Indiana’s wrestlers will look to improve their standings as they continue competition in subsequent sessions.
