Jacob Moran of Indiana University advanced to the semifinals at the NCAA Wrestling Championships on March 20, earning All-American honors in the 125-pound weight class. Moran secured his spot after a close 5-4 victory over Jore Volk of Minnesota, marking his second consecutive upset in the tournament.
Moran’s achievement is significant as it continues Indiana’s recent success at the national level. Last year, DJ Washington placed eighth at 184 pounds, and now Moran becomes the first Hoosier semifinalist since Nate Jackson reached that stage in 2016.
The match between Moran and Volk was tightly contested. Volk took an early lead with a takedown and escape, but Moran responded with escapes of his own. In the final period, Moran managed a crucial takedown with about 30 seconds remaining and maintained control to secure the win.
Other Indiana wrestlers also competed during Session III. Gabe Sollars (197 lbs.) won by technical fall against Bennett Berge of South Dakota State before being eliminated by Iowa’s Gabe Arnold in a narrow decision. Bryce Lowery (157 lbs.) and Tyler Lillard (165 lbs.) both finished their tournaments with one win and two losses each.
Moran will face Marc-Anthony McGowan of Princeton in tonight’s semifinal round. As of Session III, Indiana stands tied for fifteenth place in team standings with 19.5 points.
