Jacob Moran, seeded fourth at 125 pounds, advanced to the semifinals for Indiana University during Session I of the Big Ten Wrestling Championships held at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pennsylvania. Moran secured his place by winning two matches by technical fall, defeating Ashton Jackson from Purdue 17-2 and Nick Corday from Michigan State 20-3. With these victories, Moran also clinched a spot in the upcoming NCAA Championships.
In other results for Indiana, Gabe Sollars (197 lbs., No. 8 seed) reached the quarterfinals after an injury default win over Ben Vanadia of Purdue but was defeated by top-seeded Josh Barr of Penn State and moved into the consolation bracket.
Several Hoosiers found success in consolation matches. Blaine Frazier (133 lbs., No. 12 seed) controlled his match against Gauge Botero of Michigan with a 10-4 decision after losing his opening bout. Bryce Lowery (157 lbs., No. 11 seed) won a close match against Ty Wilson of Northwestern with a score of 4-1 following an earlier loss.
Derek Gilcher (174 lbs., No. 6 seed) recovered from an injury default loss in his first match to defeat Seth Digby of Maryland 4-2 in consolation action.
Caleb Marzolino (285 lbs., No. 14 seed) ended Session I strongly for Indiana by pinning Hayden Filipovich of Purdue in just 29 seconds after losing his first match to Nick Feldman of Ohio State.
Joey Buttler (149 lbs., No. 11 seed) narrowly lost his consolation match to August Hibler of Northwestern in sudden victory and will move to the extra ninth-place bracket as there are nine NCAA bids available at this weight class for the Big Ten.
With Sollars’ quarterfinal loss, he moves directly into the second round of consolations scheduled for Session II later that evening.
Henry Porter (141 lbs.), Tyler Lillard (165 lbs.), and Sam Goin (184 lbs.), all seeded ninth, received byes on the backside and advanced automatically to their respective second-round consolation matches.
After Session I, Indiana is tied with Rutgers for ninth place in team standings with each team earning 18 points. The leading teams are Penn State with 81 points, followed by Ohio State and Nebraska.
Session II is set to begin at 5 p.m., featuring more consolation bouts before semifinals start at 7 p.m. Moran will face top-seeded Luke Lilledahl from Penn State in his semifinal matchup while other Indiana wrestlers continue their runs through the consolation brackets.
