Isaac Trumble won the heavyweight national title at 285 pounds on March 21 by completing a perfect 21-0 season at the Rocket Arena in Cleveland during the 2026 NCAA Wrestling Championships. Trumble defeated Iowa State’s top-seeded Yonger Bastida with a score of 5-0, becoming NC State’s tenth national champion.
Trumble secured his victory after a scoreless first period, earning an escape and a takedown in the second period to take control of the match. A riding time point added to his lead, allowing the sixth-year senior to finish comfortably ahead in his final collegiate bout.
This win makes Trumble the fifth NC State wrestler to claim a national championship at 285 pounds, following Nick Gwiazdowski’s back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015. With Trumble’s performance, NC State moved into tenth place on the team leaderboard with a total of 44.5 points, surpassing Virginia Tech. The Wolfpack has now finished in the top ten of NCAA final team scores six times under head coach Pat Popolizio.
Trumble concluded his college career with an overall record of 88-20 across both the 197-pound and 285-pound divisions. He is from Springfield, Nebraska, and plans to begin his career as a field artillery officer in the U.S. Army Infantry.
The victory also marks Trumble’s second consecutive All-American honor after placing fourth last year despite competing with injuries to his ACL, MCL, and meniscus. It is also the second straight season that NC State has had an individual national champion; Vincent Robinson claimed last year’s title at 125 pounds.
