Iowa State University’s wrestling team secured a decisive 32-7 victory over West Virginia University on Friday night at Hilton Coliseum in Ames. The Cyclones, ranked No. 4 nationally, won eight out of ten matches against the No. 18 Mountaineers, marking their eighth consecutive win in this matchup and bringing their all-time record to 23-2 against West Virginia.
Iowa State (10-2 overall, 6-1 Big 12) dominated the takedown count with a margin of 27-5 over West Virginia (9-4 overall, 5-3 Big 12). The event drew an attendance of 6,456 spectators.
The meet began with an upset at the 125-pound class as Stevo Poulin, ranked No. 11, defeated No. 8 Jett Strickenberger by major decision, scoring a final tally of 14-4. Poulin had previously lost four times to Strickenberger but managed to secure a strong lead early in the match.
At the next weight class, Gunner Andrick claimed a win for Iowa State at 133 pounds by defeating Adrian Meza with a score of 5-0.
Anthony Echemendia continued Iowa State’s momentum at 141 pounds by achieving his fifth major decision of the season against Jordan Titus. Echemendia’s performance improved his season record to 14 wins and two losses and marked his fiftieth career victory.
Jacob Frost earned a narrow victory at the 149-pound class after securing an escape late in the match for a final score of 6-5 over Willie McDougald.
In one of the featured bouts, Vinny Zerban overcame Ty Watters with a third-period takedown that led to a final score of 5-2 at the 157-pound weight class.
Connor Euton delivered another strong performance for Iowa State by earning a technical fall over Sasha Gavronsky at the six-minute mark in their match at 165 pounds.
MJ Gaitan added another ranked win for Iowa State at the expense of Brody Conley in the closely contested bout at 174 pounds, finishing with a score of 5-4 thanks to riding time advantage and key points late in the match.
West Virginia’s Ian Bush registered one of two victories for his team by taking a major decision over Aiden Riggins at the 184-pound weight class.
CJ Carter responded for Iowa State with his fourth technical fall this season—defeating Cole Tolley by accumulating points steadily through three periods during their contest at the 197-pound division.
The meet concluded with Yonger Bastida extending his personal winning streak to twenty-one matches as he secured seven takedowns within less than three minutes en route to another technical fall victory over Brock Kehler in heavyweight competition. Bastida has now achieved eleven technical falls this season and eighty-eight takedowns while conceding only two on defense throughout this campaign.
Iowa State will return home Sunday for another top-ranked dual meet against Northern Iowa scheduled for broadcast on ESPN+ beginning at seven p.m.
