No. 3 Iowa State began its Big 12 dual season with a 29-14 win over Arizona State on Tuesday night at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe, Arizona. The Cyclones secured victories in seven out of ten matches, with five wins coming by bonus-point margins.
The team outperformed Arizona State in takedowns, recording a total of 25 compared to the Sun Devils’ 12.
Arizona State took an early lead after Kyler Larkin pinned Adrian Meza at 133 pounds. However, Iowa State responded quickly as Anthony Echemendia earned a technical fall at 141 pounds, winning 24-8 after securing seven consecutive takedowns. Jacob Frost followed with another technical fall for the Cyclones at 149 pounds, defeating Daniel Miranda by a score of 16-1.
After losses at the next two weights, MJ Gaitan returned to the lineup for Iowa State and achieved a technical fall over Leo Tukhlynovych at 174 pounds, scoring six takedowns in his first match since early December.
At 184 pounds, Isaac Dean overcame an early deficit to win an 8-5 decision against Azizbek Fayzullaev. CJ Carter then added another victory for Iowa State with a narrow 4-3 decision over Colton Hawks at 197 pounds.
Yonger Bastida maintained his undefeated record this season by beating David Szuba with an 18-5 major decision at heavyweight. Stevo Poulin closed out the dual for Iowa State with a strong start and finished with a major decision over Damian Moreno at 125 pounds.
Iowa State will continue its road trip on Sunday, January 11th against North Dakota State. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and will be available on NDSU All-Access.
