The University of Iowa wrestling team finished the first day of the 2026 Big Ten Championships in fourth place at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College, Pennsylvania. Michael Caliendo, seeded third, advanced to the finals in the 165-pound division for the second consecutive year after a victory over Andrew Barbosa of Rutgers.
Head coach Tom Brands commented on the team’s performance: “Caliendo in the finals, have a lot of work to do there. Lot on the backside with a lot of work to do there. Position yourself the best for the tournament that is in two weeks.”
Six Hawkeyes remain active in consolation brackets and three are competing in extra placement matches. Dean Peterson (125 pounds), Drake Ayala (133), Nasir Bailey (141), Patrick Kennedy (174), and Ben Kueter (285) will participate in Sunday morning’s consolation semifinals. Gabe Arnold continues his run in the 197-pound 11th-place bracket, while Ryder Block and Victor Voinovich III compete for ninth place at 149 and 157 pounds respectively.
After Day 1, Penn State leads with 146.5 points, followed by Ohio State with 115 and Nebraska with 112. Iowa holds fourth place with 70 points.
Caliendo will face top-seeded Mitchell Mesenbrink from Penn State in Sunday’s final at 165 pounds.

In extra brackets, Ryder Block faces Gavin Brown from Purdue for ninth place at 149 pounds; Victor Voinovich III meets Tony White from Rutgers for ninth place at 157; Gabe Arnold goes up against Hayden Walters from Michigan for eleventh place at 197.
Semifinal results saw Ayala fall to Marcus Blaze of Penn State by sudden victory, Bailey lose by technical fall to Jesse Mendez of Ohio State, Caliendo win by major decision over Barbosa, and Kennedy defeated by Christopher Minto of Nebraska.
Iowa wrestlers posted several wins during consolation rounds: Peterson earned decisions over Dedrick Navarro (Northwestern) and Kael Lauridsen (Nebraska); Kueter secured victories against Josh Terrill (Michigan State) and Luke Luffman (Illinois). In other results, Angelo Ferrari beat James Rowley (Purdue) before defaulting due to injury; Voinovich scored a major decision over Ty Wilson (Northwestern).
Gabe Arnold also recorded a win over Dylan Connell of Illinois before dropping his next bout to Remy Cotton of Rutgers.
The championships continue Sunday as Iowa looks to improve its standing heading into national competition.
