Indiana University’s wrestling team secured a 22-19 victory over Columbia University in a dual meet held Friday at Edgewood High School in Ellettsville, Indiana. This marks the second consecutive year that Indiana has defeated Columbia, following last year’s 23-21 win in New York City.
The Hoosiers clinched the match after the 197 lbs. bout, improving their season record to 2-0. The event was notable for being Indiana’s first dual meet in a high school gym since they faced Purdue at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis in 2010.
Key performances included No. 12 Jacob Moran opening with a 7-3 decision over Sulayman Bah at 125 lbs., putting Indiana ahead early. Although Columbia took an 8-3 lead after back-to-back major decisions at 133 and 141 lbs., Indiana responded with major decision wins from Joey Buttler (149) and Bryce Lowery (157). No. 21 Tyler Lillard secured an important sudden victory against No. 26 Cesar Alvan at 165 lbs., giving Indiana a six-point advantage.
Freshman Sam Goin, ranked No. 20, delivered a strong performance against No. 16 Aaron Ayzerov at 184 lbs., winning by decision without allowing a takedown. At the pivotal moment of the dual, No. 11 Gabe Sollars earned a technical fall over Adam Haselius at the 197 lbs. class.
Other notable details include three bonus-point victories for Indiana and Tyler Lillard earning his second ranked win of the season. Edgewood High School’s coach is Paul Konrath, himself a former Indiana wrestler.
Indiana will next compete against Oklahoma on Sunday, Nov. 23, in Norman, Oklahoma.
