Illinois wrestling prepares for Cougar Clash tournament in Edwardsville

The Illinois wrestling team, ranked ninth nationally, will participate in its first open tournament of the season at the Cougar Clash on Sunday, December 7. The event will take place at First Community Arena in Edwardsville, Illinois, starting at 10 a.m. Central Time.

Illinois is one of four top-25 teams competing in the tournament. Other ranked teams include No. 7 Minnesota, No. 18 Missouri, and No. 24 Little Rock. Additional participants are Northern Colorado, Bellarmine, SIUE, and Northern Illinois.

In their most recent match, Illinois narrowly defeated No. 11 Missouri with a score of 21-16. Lucas Byrd, who holds the top national ranking at 133 pounds, overcame an early deficit to win his bout against Kade Moore by a score of 12-9. Danny Pucino returned to the lineup for Illinois at 141 pounds and secured a victory over Zeke Seltzer with a score of 12-6. At 157 pounds, Kannon Webster maintained his undefeated record this season by defeating J Conway 4-1.

Entering the Cougar Clash, Illinois has recorded four wins and two losses against top-25 opponents this season and is unbeaten in two matches against Missouri.

Head coach Jim Heffernan commented on Byrd’s performance: “Lucas Byrd leads the team with 28 dual points scored on a perfect 7-0 record.” He also noted Byrd’s milestone achievement: “Earned his 100th-career win on Nov. 15 against Lehigh’s Mason Ziegler.”

Byrd currently has the fifth highest win percentage in program history with a record of 103-16 (.866). He is three victories away from reaching his fiftieth dual win and is tied for twenty-fourth most wins in program history.

Kannon Webster has started his redshirt sophomore campaign with seven consecutive wins and has accumulated twenty-five dual points—the second highest on the team—along with two major decisions.

Colin Kelly holds a record of six wins and one loss as a redshirt freshman and has earned twenty-three dual points so far this season.

Braeden Scoles stands at four wins and three losses overall with twenty dual points and shares the team lead for technical falls with two.

Luke Luffman has won five out of six matches this season and has nineteen dual points.
