The University of Illinois wrestling team, ranked No. 12 nationally, secured a decisive 27-7 victory over No. 24 Indiana on Friday night at Huff Hall in Champaign. The Illini improved their season record to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the Big Ten Conference after winning eight out of ten bouts.
Illinois started strong at 125 pounds when No. 20 Spencer Moore defeated Indiana’s No. 11 Jacob Moran in sudden victory, earning a 6-3 decision. At 133 pounds, top-ranked Lucas Byrd controlled his match and delivered an 8-1 decision, extending Illinois’ early lead to 6-0.
Indiana responded with a win at 141 pounds, narrowing the margin to 6-3, but Illinois quickly regained momentum. No. 30 Michael Gioffre edged out Joey Buttler with a close 4-3 decision at 149 pounds. At 157 pounds, No. 9 Kannon Webster achieved a technical fall over Bryce Lowery with a score of 21-5 in just over six minutes, pushing Illinois further ahead.
At the next weight class, No. 8 Braeden Scoles won an 11-9 decision against No. 19 Tyler Lillard at 165 pounds. This was followed by another overtime win from No. 25 Colin Kelly at 174 pounds over Indiana’s No. 29 Derek Gilcher, bringing Illinois past the twenty-point mark.
No. 20 Chris Moore continued his run of upsets by defeating No.14 Sam Goin at the 184-pound bout with a score of 5-3 for his third consecutive win against a top-15 opponent.
Indiana managed another win at the penultimate bout before heavyweight competitor No.13 Luke Luffman returned to action for Illinois and closed out the meet with a dominant major decision (16-4) over Caleb Marzolino.
The event drew an attendance of 405 spectators.
Looking ahead, Illinois will travel to West Lafayette for their next dual meet against Purdue on Sunday, February 8th.
