The University of Michigan wrestling team advanced four athletes to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Championships on March 19, with competition taking place at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. After the first day, Michigan is tied for ninth place among 70 teams with a total of 14 points.

This development is significant as it keeps Michigan in contention for a strong finish at the national tournament and highlights individual performances that could impact final team standings.

Graduate student Lachlan McNeil (149 pounds), redshirt sophomore Beau Mantanona (174), redshirt freshman Brock Mantanona (184), and graduate student Taye Ghadiali (heavyweight) all posted undefeated records on the opening day, combining for an 8-0 mark and earning four bonus wins. McNeil, seeded eleventh, reached his fourth consecutive NCAA quarterfinal by defeating SIU Edwardsville’s Caleb Tyus and Princeton’s Eligh Rivera. The Mantanona brothers became one of four sibling pairs to advance to the quarterfinals; Beau secured victories over Ohio’s Garrett Thompson and Oklahoma State’s Alex Facundo, while Brock notched wins against Stanford’s Abraham Wojcikiewicz and Ohio State’s Dylan Fishback.

Ghadiali dominated his matches at heavyweight with two technical falls, including a 15-0 win over Minnesota’s Koy Hopke. He also defeated Utah Valley’s Jack Forbes earlier in the day. Redshirt freshman Cameron Catrabone remains active in the consolation bracket after splitting his matches at 157 pounds. Graduate student Diego Sotelo was eliminated at 125 pounds following two close losses.

Michigan will continue its participation in the NCAA Championships on Friday, March 20, with quarterfinal matches and additional wrestleback rounds scheduled to begin at noon. The event will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
