Julian Farber and Ryder Downey of the University of Northern Iowa each won two matches on March 20 in the consolation bracket at the NCAA Division I Men’s Wrestling Championships, keeping their chances for All-American honors alive.
The progress of Farber and Downey is significant as it allows them to continue competing for national recognition while representing their university. Their advancement highlights the ongoing efforts of UNI wrestlers at a major collegiate event.
Farber, competing at 133 pounds, secured a controlled victory over Ethan Berginc from Army with a score of 7-2 after building an early lead and defending against late offensive attempts. He then edged out Evan Mougalian from Penn by riding time, finishing 6-5. Farber will next face Lucas Byrd from Illinois in the consolation quarterfinals.
Downey, wrestling at 165 pounds, dominated Cody Goebel from Wisconsin with an 18-3 technical fall before earning another technical fall against Noah Mulvaney from Bucknell, winning 18-2. Downey is set to compete against Bryce Hepner from North Carolina in the upcoming consolation semifinals.
Other UNI wrestlers concluded their tournaments: Caleb Rathjen (149 pounds) finished his season with an 11-8 record after falling in the third round of consolations; Jared Simma (174 pounds) ended his run after a second-round loss and completed his season at 15-10; Nick Fox (184 pounds) was eliminated following an overtime defeat.
The fourth session of this year’s championships will begin tonight with semifinal and additional consolation matches. Fans can follow all action through ESPN networks or visit UNI’s NCAA Championship Hub for more information.
