Illinois wrestling has qualified eight athletes for the NCAA Championships, which will take place from March 19 to 21 at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, according to a March 17 announcement. This marks the second consecutive season that Illinois has sent eight wrestlers to the national tournament, a feat last achieved by the program during the 2014 and 2015 championships.
The qualification of eight wrestlers is significant for Illinois wrestling, highlighting both individual and team achievements over the season. The event provides an opportunity for these athletes to compete at a national level and potentially earn All-America honors.
Lucas Byrd, reigning national champion at 133 pounds, leads the group as he heads to his fifth NCAA Championships. Byrd holds a record of 20-2 this season and went undefeated in dual action with a perfect 17-0 mark. He has accumulated 116 career wins—tied for ninth most in school history—and boasts an .866 win percentage, which ranks fifth all-time in program history. “His win over Minnesota’s Brandon Morvari was his 50th career dual win (now 57-3),” according to the release.
Kannon Webster returns for his second NCAA appearance after earning bronze at the Big Ten Championships and compiling a 20-4 record with seven technical falls this year. Other qualifiers include Luke Luffman (fifth NCAA appearance), Chris Moore (second), Braeden Scoles (second), Colin Kelly (first), Spencer Moore (second), and Michael Gioffre (first). Each wrestler brings notable accomplishments: Luffman led with six major decisions; Scoles had five technical falls; Kelly posted three technical falls and recorded one of the fastest pins among starters; Spencer Moore finished perfect in Big Ten duals alongside Byrd; Gioffre earned silver at Midlands; and Chris Moore secured seven top-25 wins this season.
The seeds for Illinois wrestlers are as follows: Lucas Byrd [7] at 133 pounds, Kannon Webster [7] at 157 pounds, Chris Moore [9] at 184 pounds, Braeden Scoles [17] at 165 pounds, Colin Kelly [18] at 174 pounds, Spencer Moore [18] at 125 pounds, Michael Gioffre [25] at 149 pounds, and Luke Luffman [26] at heavyweight.
Looking ahead to the championships in Cleveland, Illinois aims to build on its recent successes as its athletes seek further recognition on the national stage.
