Indiana University graduate student Derek Gilcher has been named the Big Ten Conference’s Wrestler of the Week. This marks the first time Gilcher has received this recognition.
Gilcher, who is ranked 26th nationally in the 174-pound weight class, played a key role in Indiana’s recent win over Purdue. During last Friday’s match, Indiana was behind 13-8 after the 165-pound bout. Gilcher then secured a 9-2 decision victory against No. 16 Brody Baumann. His performance helped Indiana achieve three consecutive wins in the dual, leading to a final score of 20-16 and giving Indiana its fourth straight victory over Purdue.
He is the first wrestler from Indiana University to receive this weekly conference honor since Jacob Bullock did so in December 2022.
“I am honored to be recognized by the Big Ten,” Gilcher said. “This award reflects not just my efforts but also those of my teammates and coaches.”
