The Big Ten Conference recognized 81 University of Illinois student-athletes on Mar. 18 for their academic achievements during the winter sports season, naming them to the Academic All-Big Ten team.

The recognition highlights the academic success of student-athletes who balance rigorous athletic schedules with their studies. To qualify for the Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be members of a varsity team, have been enrolled full time at their institution for at least 12 months, and maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Illinois athletes from six sports programs were honored: men’s basketball (5), women’s basketball (10), men’s gymnastics (14), women’s gymnastics (12), swimming and diving (22), and wrestling (18). The list includes students from various academic years and majors, ranging from communications and finance to kinesiology and engineering. Those who achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA are specially marked in bold on the official roster.

This recognition reflects both the commitment of Illinois student-athletes to their education and the support provided by university staff and coaches. The announcement underscores the importance placed on academic achievement alongside athletic performance within collegiate sports.

As more student-athletes continue to excel in both arenas, such honors serve as encouragement for future participants to strive for excellence in academics as well as athletics.
